T O P I C R E V I E WspaceukAt 19:00 GMT on Wednesday 19 January 2005 on UK BBC-2 TV channel there is a programme about "Gagarin: First Man In Space".This is one programme in the 'Days That Shook The World' series.Programme lasts about 30 minutes .Phill ParkerUKgliderpilotukpreviously screened on BBC Four and a VERY good programme with interesting interviews, including his relatives and the late Titov.PaulmachbustermanPhil,Thanks for sharing. I think the last time this was on it was during the "wee hours" of the morning. I'll look forward to watching it.My best regards, Derekpaul prendergastDear Phil,Thanks for that i missed it last time PaulPhilipThanks for pointing this out to us ;-) !spaceukHope you watched it tonight :-))Having seen it just - I now recall having seen it before some time ago.One thing that did strike home to me - and I can't say that I've noticed it before - even though I have seen several news reels and documentaries about Soviet spaceflight, is the real news scene that shows the loading of the Gagarin and Titov aboard the transfer bus.The bus entrance destination sign actually says Baikonur in Russian !!That was obviously a subtle clue by the Soviets (at the time in April 1961) to the Western world "confirming" where the launch site was sited ! Phill ParkerUKTonyqI've never seen that brief clip either. Interesting that they both walked out to the bus together, because for later flights, and certainly by Vostok 6, the prime and back-up walked to the bus, and were filmed seperately. I've always assumed this was to cover the scenario whereby, if the back-up flew, they could produce newsreel of either cosmonaut and present it as if they were the prime crew.PhilipI guess they had to use 'actors' as most of the sequences were not filmed ... but they should have mentioned the bus stopped for a piss-pauze ;-)The suits were well-done, especially the helmet the actors were wearing.
